We work in two of the poorest countries in the world, Niger and Mali.

In both countries, women and girls suffer most, walking 4-6 miles a day to find water.

The water they find is often contaminated.

Because they have to walk miles for water, girls don’t go to school.

The consequences of generations of uneducated women are tragic.

70% of Nigerien and 78% of Malian women cannot read or write.

Just 14.6% of girls in Niger and 29% of girls in Mali complete secondary school.

76% of girls in Niger are married by age 18.

That’s the world’s highest rate of child marriage.

The maternal mortality rate in Mali is 2.6 times the global average.

It’s the 13th most dangerous country in the world for women giving birth.

Niger has the highest fertility rate in the world – 6.5 births per woman.

Mali is not far behind with 5.7 births per woman.

Health care facilities are also in desperate need of safe water.
